Is it possible for combined interventional treatment to treat giant renal angiomyolipomas?

Angiomyolipomas (AMLs) are benign renal neoplasms consisted of fat, blood vessels and smooth muscle tissue. They are usually asymptomatic however they can cause mass renal haemorrhage. Even though they are benign in nature, they can spread into and destroy surrounding tissue. Both bleeding and expansion are more likely with tumours that are larger than4 cm. Nephron preservation is the preferred treatment consideration, especially in patients with a solitary kidney or multiple, bilateral, and often very large AMLs. Selective arterial embolism is currently the most popular therapeutic method. Although it is considered effective in preventing hemorrhage, long-term follow-up revealed a relatively high AML related hemorrhage recurrence rate and a significant risk of regrowth after embolization especially in patients with multiple or large AMLs. In the present case report we present the successful treatment of a giant renal angiomyolipoma in a patient with solitary kidney and multiple renal AMLs following combination of selective arterial embolism and radiofrequency ablation.
